Make self-care clear and make optimal use of me-time.

Self-care: walking, meditating, skin care, setting goals, exercising, reading, listening to music, yoga, breathing exercises, podcasts and good conversation. Overwhelming? With the self-care dimensions you can easily structure self-care so that you have more overview and can make better self-care choices.

Choice stress, we all suffer from it in various areas. We want the best for ourselves. Of course also when you look at moments for yourself: me-time. What are you going to do? When it comes to self-care, you want to benefit as much as possible . Which self-care activities do you choose? Which combination of self-care activities contribute most to the right balance in life?

The Gottman Institute has made it easier for us to come up with a good approach. Self-care is split into 5 dimensions , creating a self-care structure. The 5 dimensions are:

  1. Physical self-care
  2. Emotional self-care
  3. Social self-care
  4. Spiritual self-care
  5. Intellectual self-care

By adding self-care activities for each of these dimensions into your life, you will nurture every aspect of your life and take better care of yourself. You pay attention to your body, mind and soul. Always keep the definition of self-care in mind.

It is now time to delve deeper into the different dimensions by explaining what they mean and how they can help you. With the examples you can think about which self-care activities you want to include in your life. Ready to get started?

1. Physical self-care

Physical self-care is the most common form of self-care that people engage in. The physical dimension includes health, physical care, nutrition, exercise, physical touch, safety and sexual needs. Among other things you can do to increase your energy level and increase self-esteem with physical self-care:

  • Develop a consistent training schedule.
  • Treat yourself to a massage every month.
  • Apply a beauty routine daily.
  • Get a good night's sleep and go to bed on time.

Self-care is giving the world the best of you instead the rest of you

2. Emotional self-care

Emotional self-care and mental self-care go hand in hand. We are talking about the mind or the mind. Mindsets are beliefs and thoughts, positive or not. It is the way of thinking that determines our emotions. In this dimension you want to focus on evaluating your thoughts and interpretations. And how you can change negative thinking patterns . By taking care of this dimension we can better understand ourselves and deal with challenges better. The result is a better relationship with ourselves and with the outside world in which compassion, kindness and love are paramount.

  • Write, read, and say positive affirmations to yourself.
  • Dare to say no, especially in stressful periods.
  • Be grateful. List 3 things you are thankful for every day.
  • Talk to someone, such as a coach, who you can trust about your personal struggles.
  • Listen inspiring podcasts about positively influencing your mindset.

3. Spiritual self-care

The spiritual dimension is very personal, but it aims to reach a deeper personal level of understanding. It is the layer behind our emotions and mind. The term soul or 'soul' is often used in English. Spiritual self-care is about connecting with something bigger than yourself (your ego) and also with yourself. For some people, spirituality falls within a religious framework. Spiritual self-care leads to meaning and connection. To make it clearer, a few examples:

  • Take a walk through nature. Consider the natural beauty and that you are part of this beautiful world.
  • Meditate in the morning and / or evening. It provides peace and clarity.
  • Draw an Oracle card every morning, and think about the meaning of this card in your life.
  • Be alone more often and talk to yourself. Who are you really, without defining yourself in a social role? Which values do you find important? What do you want in this life?

4. Intellectual self-care

The desire to learn new things and expand knowledge has a positive effect on our well-being. It's about activities that sharpen your mind, increase knowledge and deepen your thinking. It is about the balance between stimulating your mind, but also giving yourself a break. It will bring creativity and innovation to life.

When did you learn something new? Learning does not necessarily mean sitting in the school desks. Learning is possible at any time of the day. During your work, or during moments for yourself such as reading a book. Other examples:

  • Attend a workshop like Mindfulness.
  • Have a philosophical conversation.
  • Learn a new language.
  • Watch a documentary on television.

5. Social self-care

The social connection is indispensable for your self-care. The word self-care seems to indicate explicitly that 'self-care' should only focus on yourself, but nothing could be further from the truth. We are social creatures so it is important that we also focus on developing and deepening healthy and loving relationships with others. Social connection helps to create a sense of connection and acceptance. What you can do:

  • Lunch with friends or "old" friends.
  • Plan a getaway with your family.
  • Volunteer.
  • Break "toxic" relationships, relationships that negatively affect you.

You have just read about the dimensions of self-care. You not only want to stand on the sidelines, but also apply. Think about which two dimensions appeal to you and how you can integrate them into your normal daily life. Which activities excite you?

It is easiest to start with simple things . Schedule a monthly recurring lunch with that friend that you would be happy to discuss in depth. Read a few pages before going to sleep. Start exercising, and if you don't like sports, take a walk through nature every Saturday morning. Treat yourself to a mini cleansing beauty routine every night. Wear a bracelet with an inspiring quote or a positive affirmation.
